There is no useful single price for “a website” or “marketing support” without a scope. This guide explains how to build a budget from deliverables and current quotes; it does not present invented market averages.
Start with the pricing model
A fixed fee suits a defined deliverable with clear assumptions. Hourly or daily work can suit evolving tasks, but needs reporting and an agreed spending limit. A retainer reserves ongoing support or a recurring scope; ask what capacity, response expectations and unused time it includes. Compare the commitment as well as the headline price.
Identify the cost drivers for your service
Different services become more demanding for different reasons. Explain these variables in your brief so providers can estimate the same work.
- SEO: site size, languages, technical investigation, content production and who implements changes.
- Web development: custom functions, integrations, migration, design readiness and testing.
- Graphic design: research, concepts, formats, revision rounds and licensed materials.
- Marketing: channel count, asset production, reporting and media spend, quoted separately.
- Consulting: research depth, stakeholder access, specialist knowledge and implementation support.
Compare the total over the same period
Add setup, agreed delivery fees and recurring costs over the period you are evaluating. Include known third-party charges and ask how applicable taxes are shown. Keep optional work separate. For example, an illustrative quote with €1,200 setup and €200 monthly support costs €2,400 over six months before any separately stated tax or extras. Those numbers demonstrate the calculation, not a market rate.
Ask what could change the estimate
Missing content, delayed access, additional stakeholders and new functionality can alter scope. Ask each professional to state their assumptions and how a change is priced before it is approved. If uncertainty is high, price discovery separately and use its output to refine the implementation budget.
Turn a budget into a comparable request
Share the essential outcome, any budget ceiling and where you can compromise. Request a core option and separately priced additions rather than asking for the cheapest possible package. Review several current proposals for the same brief; if they differ widely, resolve the scope differences before using them as a price benchmark.
