Expertise, with clarity

Business consultants for a defined decision or change

Compare business consultants by relevant experience, method and deliverables. Scope a diagnostic, strategy or implementation engagement.

Clear requests. Considered choices.

A business consultant can help frame a problem, evaluate options and support a change. The brief becomes more useful when it names a decision, an accountable team and the evidence available to work with.

Define the question and the output

An open-ended request for growth advice is hard to assess. Describe the decision you need to make and the form of the recommendation.

  • The business question, constraints, stakeholders and decision deadline.
  • Data review, interviews or workshops, with clear access and confidentiality boundaries.
  • A decision memo, prioritised action plan or implementation roadmap, with assumptions and responsibilities.

Assess relevant consulting experience

Ask about comparable problems, the consultant’s role and how recommendations were used. Discuss their method for dealing with incomplete evidence and ask what would cause them to change a recommendation. Establish who performs the work if a firm sells the engagement but assigns a different delivery team.

How consulting fees depend on scope

The amount of research, stakeholder involvement, specialist knowledge and implementation support affects effort. Compare a bounded diagnostic with a longer programme separately. Ask what each phase produces, which expenses are additional and how either party can stop after a review point. Avoid treating hours alone as a complete measure of value.

Example consulting brief

“Our service business needs to reduce delays between a signed proposal and project kickoff. We can share an anonymised process map and interview three team leads. Please propose a diagnostic and a prioritised improvement plan with owners and measures. Quote implementation support separately and identify the information needed before confirming scope.”

Turn recommendations into an owned plan

Before accepting the final work, check that assumptions, trade-offs and next actions are documented. Assign an internal owner to each accepted action. Agree whether follow-up is included. For questions outside general business consulting, establish whether a separately qualified adviser is required before expanding the engagement.
